Future Figures: Empowering Teens with STEAM!
Event day is here!
On Saturday, April 1st, over 70 teens from the Kansas City area will converge on ArtsTech in the Crossroads to attend Future Figures: Empowering Teens with STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics).
Co-sponsored by the Kansas City Digital Media Lab (KCDML), ArtsTech, UrbanTEC and TEKsystems, this event is an opportunity to let more teens know about all the awesome educational and developmental opportunities in the KC area. Piggybacking on the success of the Hidden Figures book and movie to encourage teens to become more engaged with learning and STEAM topics.
The event starts at 10 am, and runs until 1 pm, with three distinct parts:
From 10 am – 11:30 am, teens and families would interact with 9 organizations who have Playlists on the LRNGkc Platform OR have awesome educational activities to share. Teens can learn how to get involved with STEAM learning in KC, get hands-on activity experience, and make connections with peers and organizations. The following organizations on board: Digistory KC, the Makerspace at Johnson County Library, the KC Youth Commission, UrbanTEC, KCPL Teen Librarians, Dr. H20, the KC Social Innovation Center, Connecting for Good, and KCDML.
From 11:30 am – 12:30 pm, DML will provide lunch for everyone (a taco bar from Rudy’s Tenampa Taqueria), and host featured professionals who have careers in the STEAM fields who are inspirational movers and shakers in or from Kansas City. Instead of a traditional panel where the audience asks questions, we’re envisioning that teens can connect with these awesome folks, eat lunch with them, and talk in a roundtable fashion to get inspired to learn more about how they use STEAM to succeed in and out of the classroom.
From 12:30 pm – 1 pm, teens will have a chance to participate in Hidden Figures Jeopardy, to test their knowledge of the book and win awesome prizes.
